Student lectures

We visit all UK dental schools to give lectures to fourth year students and final year students. The format of the lectures (online or face-to-face) is subject to dental school policies. Please contact the final year administrator or BDA reps at your dental school for more information.

Fourth year student lectures

To help dental students explore their future career choices, we visit dental schools to give an in-depth careers lecture to fourth year (BDS4) students.

The speakers are Dr Andrea Ogden, undergraduate and career development lead/lead speaker, and Peter Dyer, BDA president 2017-18 and consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon. The fourth-year lecture will give you an insight into your future career options. It covers an overview of your dental career options, routes into each career pathway, case studies from experienced practitioners, career choices, and explores the future of dentistry.

Our career guide is the supporting material for this lecture. It includes useful advice from experienced dentists who give their opinions on a range of careers, a detailed overview on different career paths, plus tips for succeeding in your chosen career. Copies of the new guide are posted out to fourth year (BDS4) student members every autumn.

Our career guide is available for the BDA student members only. To become a BDA student member (only £2.67 per month) join online or give our membership team a call on 020 7563 4550.

Final year student lectures

To help students prepare Dental Foundation Training, we visit all UK dental schools to give an overview of the national recruitment process.

The speakers are Dr Andrea Ogden, undergraduate and career development lead / lead speaker, Dr Alasdair Miller, BDA past president and former postgraduate dental dean for the South-West, and Jonathan Lewney, consultant in Public Health and associate editor for BDJ Portfolio.

The lecture is an introduction and overview of the national recruitment process across the UK. It contains the latest updates on national recruitment and key dates, as well as application tips and recommendations. For final year students applying to NHS schemes in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, we offer an online Situational Judgement Test course.
