Introduction to expert witness work
As an expert witness, you may find yourself called upon to assist courts, tribunals, or legal professionals in understanding complex dental issues. Drawing on your experience as a practitioner or academic, you will analyse dental records, testify on standards of care, and offer opinions in cases involving dental injuries or malpractice.
This role requires you to have a deep understanding of dental practises, ethical considerations, and the ability to clearly communicate complex concepts within a legal context. As a dental expert, you will be responsible for distinguishing between observed facts and your professional opinion. Your evidence is intended to assist the court and will be subject to cross-examination. If your evidence is not robust, you could face criticism from the court, with the potential humiliation of that criticism being published publicly.
