Paediatric dentistry

Paediatric dentistry involves the practice, teaching, and research of comprehensive and therapeutic oral healthcare for children from birth through adolescence.

Introduction to paediatric dentistry

Paediatric dentistry involves providing care for children with intellectual, medical, physical, psychological, and/or emotional challenges. You will cover most aspects of oral healthcare, including restorative care, minor oral surgical procedures, and interceptive orthodontics.

As a paediatric dentist, you will work closely with general dental practitioners and other specialists, such as orthodontists, oral surgeons, oral medicine experts, and restorative dentists. You will also collaborate with paediatricians, surgeons, and anaesthetists as part of a team caring for children with complex medical and behavioural needs.

You may need to liaise with other agencies, such as health visitors and social workers, to safeguard children. This can be extremely challenging and requires sensitivity as well as tenacity to work through the issues. Paediatric dentistry can be practised within:

  • Independent practice (including NHS or private practice)
  • Public Dental Service (PDS) and Community Dental Service (CDS)
  • Hospital settings.

Paediatric dentistry is a popular career choice for many young dentists.
