Overview
The Equality Act 2010 consolidates previous anti-discrimination legislation in England, Scotland and Wales giving individuals greater protection from unfair discrimination and clarifying employer responsibilities. As a provider of services, you must treat everyone with dignity and respect. Legislation in Northern Ireland has not yet been consolidated but the current legislation is comprehensive, although it does not recognise discrimination based on association. See also guidance published by:
- The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) and the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland monitor and promote equality. Both provide guidance on complying with anti-discrimination and equal opportunities requirements
- The Equality Advisory Support Service (EASS) provides information and advice about discrimination and human rights issues in England, Scotland and Wales, and provides the helpline service previously provided by the EHRC
- ACAS provides useful guidance on equality and diversity, preventing discrimination and dealing with discrimination.
