It is widely accepted that work can provide health benefits and that prolonged sickness absence is isolating and can damage confidence. The active management of sickness absence to achieve a successful return to work is therefore accepted as good practice.
Whilst prolonged sickness absence or frequent and persistent short-term absence can ultimately lead to termination of employment, ill health issues should be managed under a fair, proportionate, and transparent policy with an emphasis on supportive - not punitive - measures.
This advice is relevant to any salaried dentist experiencing either short or long-term absence due to ill health. Advice and support regarding sickness absence is also available from your Employment Relations Officer (ERO).
