Overview
Dental amalgam remains an important option for restorative dental treatments in the UK. It is durable, cost-effective, and highly suitable for a range of clinical scenarios. However, its use is subject to specific guidelines to protect both patients and the environment.
Appropriate use of dental amalgam
Dental amalgam can still be used across the UK with no immediate plans to phase it out entirely. However, its use is restricted for certain patient groups.
Restrictions introduced on 1 July 2018 mean that dentists are to avoid using amalgam in children under 15, pregnant women, and breastfeeding women unless it is strictly necessary for medical reasons.
In Northern Ireland, additional rules apply. Dental amalgam can only be used for patients residing in the UK, and proof of a UK home address is required. Furthermore, practitioners must be registered in Northern Ireland to carry out such treatments.
