Using dental amalgam in the UK

This advice provides information on the use of dental amalgam in the UK.

Overview

Dental amalgam remains an important option for restorative dental treatments in the UK. It is durable, cost-effective, and highly suitable for a range of clinical scenarios. However, its use is subject to specific guidelines to protect both patients and the environment.

Appropriate use of dental amalgam

Dental amalgam can still be used across the UK with no immediate plans to phase it out entirely. However, certain patient groups require careful consideration.

Restrictions introduced on 1 July 2018 which are detailed in the UKs implementation of the European Union’s 2017 Regulation on Mercury mean that dentists have been advised to avoid using amalgam in children under 15, pregnant women, and breastfeeding women unless it is strictly necessary for medical reasons. This recommendation is based on environmental concerns rather than health risks.

In Northern Ireland, additional rules apply. Dental amalgam can only be used for patients residing in the UK, and proof of a UK home address is required. Furthermore, practitioners must be registered in Northern Ireland to carry out such treatments.
