David Johnson

Dr David Johnson is a Wolfson Foundation Scholar graduating from Cardiff Dental School in 2001. David has worked in the Community Dental Service or the past 18 years, having previously worked in General Practice and Cardiff Dental School, where he held a position of Honorary Clinical Lecturer in Oral Medicine.
He is currently working as a Dental Officer in the Bridgend area treating special needs children and adults for Cwm Taf Morgannwg uHB. His week is split between treating patients under General Anaesthetic & Sedation and treating patients in a Medium Secure Forensic Mental Health clinic.
Outside of work David lectures nationally on the use of Acupuncture within Dentistry as an adjunct to treatment and as a means of pain and anxiety control; with delegates travelling from overseas to attend the courses that he teaches for the British Dental Acupuncture Society. When not lecturing, he promotes and works with Bridge2Aid, a dental charity providing vital dental pain relief training and for healthcare workers to deliver sustainable dentistry in the developing world.

Shilpa Chaudhry Vice Chair of Welsh Council and representative for Cardiff and Southeast Wales Section

Shilpa Chaudhry graduated from Cardiff Dental School in 1988 and worked in Swansea for one year, where she did her vocational training. Shilpa then moved to Leicester for 18 months as an associate and eventually returned to Wales and joined the practice in Aberdare as an associate in 1991.
Shilpa purchased the practice in Aberdare as a partner in 2006 and has been in Aberdare for over 30 years. The practice has evolved from a 3-chair practice to a 5-chair practice and is 100% NHS. Shilpa is passionate about the NHS values in equality and giving access to good dentistry to all the population, especially in deprived areas.
Shilpa has good knowledge about the NHS system and how it has evolved over the years and has been actively involved in the pilot contract changes (preventative dental care for children and young people 2010/11 and currently with contract reform). Shilpa's practice has been a dental foundation training practice since 2016. Shilpa has always been keen to be an early adopter with new initiatives so she can pave the way for younger colleagues. She hopes her 30 years in NHS dentistry can offer some experience.
Outside of dentistry, Shilpa is a mother of two grown up boys and enjoys fitness and cooking.

David Gingell
Representative for Gwent Section

Dai is a retired GDP since the end of December 2020. He spent his working life in mainly NHS practice in the West Midlands as an associate, then was a practice owner for 26 years before moving back to Wales as an associate again for eight years before retirement. Dai was a vocational trainer for many years. Dai has been a keen supporter of the BDA for many years and had the honour to serve on national committees. This is Dai's second triennium on the BDA Welsh Council. Dai hopes to help the BDA and its members to the best of his abilities.

 Tiago Maia Representative for Swansea and West Wales Section

Tiago Maia graduated with a degree in Dental Medicine, Porto, Portugal in 1999 and with post graduate trainings in Orthodontics. Tiago worked as a general dental practitioner with special interest in Orthodontics until 2012 when he moved to Wales to work as an associate dentist in a general dental practice. In 2017, joined the Hywel Dda Community Dental Services where he works to date in Ceredigion. He joined the Welsh Council Committee of the British Dental Association this year.

Ian Douglas
Representative for West Lancs/West Cheshire/North Wales

Ian Douglas qualified from Cardiff Dental School in 1982. After working in several hospital House Jobs and General Practice in Bristol he settled in North Wales and became a Practice Owner in 1988. He is still a committed NHS principal at the same practice outside Wrexham 28 years later. He has been the North Wales LDC secretary since 2000.

Lauren Harrhy Representative for Aneurin Bevan, Cardiff and Vale Health Boards

Lauren qualified from Cardiff in 2009 and has worked full time as a GDP in Wales ever since. She bought her practice, Sparkle Dental Centre, in 2017 and became a Foundation Trainer in 2020. She is currently nearing completion of a PGDIP in Aesthetic Medicine.
Lauren's main focus for the past few years has been on helping to maintain the mental health of dental professionals. She set up a closed Facebook forum where dentists are able to discuss all aspects of mental health, stress and crisis. Lauren is a founding member and current trustee of Confidental, a helpline providing emotional first aid and signposting to dentists in crisis. In addition to her role on the PEC she is also on various other BDA committees as a representative.
Outside of dentistry Lauren is married with three young children and quite a lot of pets! |
Ruby Long Representative for CCUDER

Ruby graduated from Bristol in 2017 and came to Wales to complete her foundation and core training. She has completed posts in both maxillofacial surgery and restorative dentistry.
Ruby is now a full-time clinical lecturer in restorative dentistry at Cardiff University where she is the lead for professionalism and clinical lead for years 1 & 2. Ruby has just started her PhD focussing on resilience of oral healthcare professionals and is looking forward to exploring this topic more over the next couple of years.

James Field Representative for CCUDER

James is a full-time Senior Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry, and an Honorary Consultant in Prosthodontics. He is currently the Director for Learning and Teaching at Cardiff Dental School. He has extensive experience with delivering innovative teaching in restorative dentistry.
James holds a Master of Arts degree in Education and a National Teaching Fellowship. He is also a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Educators, and a Fellow of the Faculty of Dental Trainers.
James has been involved with the BDA for many years, primarily through the activities of the Northern Counties Branch, and he is currently a committee member of CUDDER. |
Petros Mylonas Representative for CCUDER

Petros is a full-time Clinical Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry and is currently completing his StR training in Restorative Dentistry at Cardiff Dental School.
He obtained his BDS (2012) from University of Birmingham School of Dentistry, an MMedEd (2018) from Warwick Medical School focusing on elearning and curriculum development, and a PhD in Prosthodontics and Biomaterials (2019) from King's College London Faculty of Dentistry, Oral & Craniofacial Sciences which focused on novel methods of detecting erosive tooth wear in vitro.
He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Authority, and a Member of the Royal Colleges of Glasgow (MFDS RCPS) and of England (MJDF RCS). Petros teaches all aspects of restorative dentistry and dental biomaterials to undergraduate BDS and Dental Hygiene and Therapy students. He also conducts research in the fields of Prosthodontics, Endodontics, Dental Education, and Surface Metrology. He is currently the module co-lead for BDS 2 clinical training and Dental Materials. |
Shaira Kassam Representative for CCHDS

Shaira is currently a Speciality Trainee Registrar in Orthodontics based in Wales.
After graduating from University of Leeds in 2015, Shaira completed Dental Foundation Training and has since gained experience in both primary and secondary care settings. She undertook Dental Core Training posts in various specialities including; Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Paediatric and Restorative Dentistry. Shaira also worked as an Associate in General Dental Practice and in the Emergency Out of Hours service.
Shaira's early involvement in the BDA includes the elected role of Chairperson of the Dundee and Perth Branch. She is now a member of the BDA Young Dentist Committee and represents Dental Trainees across Wales as part of the Central Committee for Hospital Dental Services.
Outside of Dentistry, Shaira regularly practices yoga and enjoys exploring the Welsh coastline.

Bethan Jones Representative for CCHDS

Bethan graduated from Bristol University in 2020 and returned home to Swansea to complete her dental foundation training year. Following this, Bethan entered Dental Core Training and has since completed a post in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and is currently working in Paediatric Dentistry at the University Dental Hospital, Wales.
Bethan has a keen interest in Paediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics. Bethan is currently a Trainee Representative on the Central Committee of Hospital Dental Services, the BDA Representative to the Welsh Junior Doctor Committee Reference Group. She is also a member of the Young Dentists Committee of the British Dental Association.
Outside of Dentistry, Bethan enjoys stand up paddle boarding and spending time outdoors walking her dogs. |
Russell Gidney Chair of WGDPC

Russell Gidney has been chair of WGDPC since 2021. Russell enjoys the challenges that the committee presents, representing the views of practices and practitioners to Government and organisations in Wales, representing Wales through the home nations and meeting dentist's across Wales.
Russell qualified from Cardiff in 2002 and has worked in general practice in South Wales since that time. Vocational training and his first five years in Caldicot before moving to Chepstow in 2007 to manage a start-up practice. Russell has owned the practice since 2009 which he manages with his wife. The practice is now six surgeries and approximately equally split NHS and Private.
Russell is a Educational Supervisor for Foundation Dentistry and works one day a week back in Cardiff University supervising the undergraduate clinics.
Russell has been active on the Gwent Local Dental Committee since 2015 and served as treasurer until 2021. He sits on the Agenda committed for the national conference and has been a member of WGDPC since 2018.

Manolis Roditakis
Chair WCCD

Manolis Roditakis graduated from Athens Dental School in 2002. In Greece, he gained experience in the Armed Forces, in Private Practice and as a volunteer dentist with a charity at his hometown in Chania, Crete. Since 2010, he has lived in the UK.
Manolis has obtained clinical experience in NHS and Private practice in London. He completed a Certificate in Paediatric Dentistry at the Eastman Dental Institute, UCL and then joined the Public Dental Service in Shetland islands, Scotland. During his time in Scotland, he obtained the NHS Education for Scotland Remote & Rural Fellowship for further postgraduate studies in Paediatric dentistry at the University of Aberdeen. He also gained Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
Since 2015, Manolis has worked as a Senior Dental Officer for the Community Dental Service in Hywel Dda University Health Board in Wales. He treats patients with special needs and children referred from the GDS for sedation. Manolis is dedicated in supporting children from disadvantaged backgrounds and this drove his involvement with the BDA and the WCCD. He believes in equitable and compassionate care for the most vulnerable members of the society.
Outside work, Manolis runs the Classic Athens Marathon every year since 2017 as an ambassador for ELEPAP, a Greek charity supporting children with disabilities. He is also the founder of Small Bricks Project, using donated Lego bricks to create toys for young patients in the Community Dental Service.

Tim Harker Representative for PEC

Born in Yorkshire, after qualifying from Guy's, Tim has spent his career in general practice in South Wales and has been a Vocational Trainer for 10 years.
He is a former Chair of Gwent LDC and was Treasurer of the Annual Conference of LDCs for many years.

Eddie Crouch Chair of PEC
|
Eddie was elected as Chair of the board in September 2020. Before that, he served as Deputy Chair between 2014 and 2020. He was Secretary of the Birmingham Local Dental Committee for over 10 years and was also Chair. He qualified in 1984 from Kings and now provides Orthodontic Care for patients in South Birmingham in two locations, having previously been a Clinical Assistant in Orthodontics.
He has previously Chaired the Annual Conference of LDCs and the West Midlands Association of LDCs, held the post of President of the Central Counties Branch and served on the GDPC Committee for over ten years.
He has been married to Jane for over 30 years and has a daughter Laura and a grandson and granddaughter. In 2007 he successfully challenged a termination clause in PDS Agreements in the High Court.

Peter Crooks Vice Chair of PEC
|
Peter is Deputy Chair of PEC. He worked entirely in general practice, first as an associate for four years and then as a practice owner in Ballymena for thirty years. The practice began life fully NHS, but was a mixed practice when it was sold in 2017. Since then, Peter has worked as a dentist on three visits to West Africa with Mercy Ships. He was Chair of the Northern LDC from 2009 to 2011 and Chair of Northern Ireland DPC from June 2010 until January 2018.
He has been married for 37 years and has one daughter, two sons and three grandchildren. Peter is a BDA Trustee, Chairs the BDA Finance Committee and is the Board nominee on the Board of Trustees of the BDA Benevolent Fund.
