To understand the art and science of diagnosis and how to use available evidence to reach the correct diagnosis and drive appropriate treatment strategies.

Learning objectives:

Review the structures involved with the sensation [and cause] of dental and oro-facial pain

Discuss the diagnostic 'armoury' at our disposal to form a diagnosis

Patient history - can the literature tell us anything

Clinical examination:

-General findings

-Tooth specific findings

-Special tests- pulpal tests with clinical tips and tricks

-Radiography- understand the limitation of X-rays and learn how this  can make us better clinicians


Describe the common pulpal and periapical diseases: what is the correct treatment

Understand cracks in teeth and the problems that they can cause:

  • Cracked tooth syndrome

  • Cracks in non-vital and root-filled teeth

Differentiate between the different types of resorption and learn how to form provisional [resorption] diagnoses.

Learning content

A lecture based session with the opportunity to ask questions to the speakers.

Jonathan Hatton

Jonathan Hatton is a registered Endoodontic Specialist with the General Dental Council. Jonathan qualified from Barts and The London with honours in his BDS and BSc degrees. He completed his foundation training on the south coast where he spent a year as a maxillofacial senior house officer at St Richard’s hospital in Chichester.

He devoted himself to endodontology thereafter and attended The Eastman Dental Institute, UCL. Jonathan was awarded distinction in his MClinDent (Endodontology) and soon after passed the prestigious MRD examination with the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
