Are you OK? An interview with Dame Clare Gerada, Medical Director of Practitioner Health

Aim

To improve awareness of mental health and bereavement support available to dentists and trainees.  
 
A live interview-style webinar session with Professor Dame Clare Gerada to highlight the work of Practitioner Health; a self-referral service offering a safe confidential space open to dentists. As well as mental health support, bereavement support and specialist support to trainees will also be discussed.  

Learning objectives

•    Raise awareness of Practitioner Health’s self-referral service for support with mental health issues
•    Learn how to support dentists and teams show that it’s okay to not be okay, and to seek professional, targeted help
•    Understand the benefits of self-referring sooner rather than later
•    Understand the wellbeing and prevention resources available.

​Dame Clare Gerada

Dr Gerada is a registered Medical Practitioner with experience and knowledge in the provision of general practice, mental health and addiction services. She undertook her psychiatric training at the Maudsley and Bethlam Hospitals from 1986 to 1990.

Since 1991, Dr Gerada has worked as a Principal in General Practice, though she has maintained her interest and expertise in the addiction field. Dr Gerada writes, teaches and lectures widely on the subject of the role of general practitioners in the care of substance misusers. Since 1993, she has been the lead clinician for the Consultancy Liaison Addiction Service which provides support to general practitioners, such that they are able to deliver effective care to drug users.

Dr Gerada has held a number of national roles, including, Senior Policy Advisor Department of Health, Drugs and Alcohol. She was also the Director of RCGP Substance Misuse Use Unit and was Chair of RCGP National Expert Group on Substance Misuse. In both of these roles she provided national leadership in substance misuse, developing the RCGP Certificate in Substance Misuse and supporting the creation of shared care working across England.

Dr Gerada was Director of Primary Care, National Clinical Governance Support Team from 2003 to 2006. She was Vice Chair of RCGP from 2007-2010 and later Chair from 2011-2013.

Dame Clare Gerada was awarded DBE in the 2020 Queens Birthday Honours for services to General Practice.

Immediate Past President of BDA and advocate for wellbeing in dentistry

As a retired Consultant Orthodontist, Roz is Chair of Probing Stress in Dentistry in Northern Ireland (NI) and is Immediate Past President of the British Dental Association.

Roz was involved in the representative side of the BDA from her student days and chaired NI Council 2015 until 2019. Roz was President of the NI Branch in 1999.

Roz established "Probing Stress in Dentistry", which works to raise the awareness of mental well-being in the dental workforce in NI and to establish a network of mental health first aiders to support and signpost dental teams who are experiencing difficulty. She continues to work on wellbeing in dentistry and remains a member on the Education, Ethics and Dental Team Working Committee of the BDA.
