Aim

To give an update on modern approaches to cariology with particular emphasis on managing compromised first permanent molars in children.

Learning objectives

  • Participants will gain knowledge of the ICDAS cariology classification system and care planning as well as managing Molar Incisor Hypoplastic/Hypomineralised enamel defects in children’s first permanent molars
  • Discuss current orthodontic management guidelines for FPMs and the challenge of determining the long term prognosis.

11:15 Hard to reach people, or hard to reach services? 

Aim

People who face social exclusion face significant barriers to accessing dental care. 36% of people who experience homelessness have accessed Accident & Emergency departments for dental issues and 15% have resorted to pulling their own teeth out because they weren't able to get to a dentist. We will learn which groups face social exclusion and why they find accessing dentistry challenging. The talk will give practical solutions to overcome barriers to care and the innovative and inclusive approach Dentaid has to caring for these communities.

  • Discuss practical solutions for dental professionals to overcome these barriers
  • Learn about the services Dentaid the dental charity offers in the UK.

13:15 BONJ - MRONJ - The light bulb moments - A clinicians experience and personal perspective over several decades

Aim

To highlight the development of knowledge around the us of MRONJ drugs and how they may impact on short, medium and long term dental care. This will be illustrated by short vignettes.

  • Understand about the drugs that are implicated in MRONJ
  • Outline the factors to consider in the short, medium  and long term dental treatment planning for those patients on or about to commence MRONJ inducing drugs
  • Discuss possible alternative treatment plans as a patient centred approach to care.

15:50 Realistic dentistry in older people

Aim

The aim of this talk is to discuss dental care for older people from the experiences of a special care hospital dental team. Case examples will be provided to demonstrate the variety and complexity of dental presentations. Access to care will be considered alongside the need for multi-disciplinary working, with reference to some principles of realistic dentistry in planning and delivering care.

Learning objectives

At the end of this session, delegates will be able to:

  • Describe the importance of multidisciplinary working to achieve optimum outcomes
  • Describe some of the potential challenges of the future in our older patients
  • Explain how concepts of realistic dentistry might be applied for treatment planning and service delivery for older patients.

Aim

One of the most challenging decisions in special care dentistry is how to provide safe and effective dental care for patients who are unable to tolerate even an examination whilst awake. This presentation will describe the decision making process and discuss the advantages and limitations of general anaesthesia, and conscious sedation. The talk will be illustrated with clinical cases.

11:15 Accessing self care and why it is a superpower

Aim

Self-care in dentistry is not a luxury but a necessity. It enables oral healthcare professionals to sustain  their physical health, navigate emotional challenges, and maintain mental resilience, ultimately ensuring the delivery of high-quality patient care in a sustainable manner. The aim of this talk is to deliver actionable tools and techniques for attendees to take away and implement immediately.

  • Understand the importance of emotional resilience in dentistry
  • Explore techniques for managing stress, fostering mindfulness, and developing coping mechanisms to navigate the emotional challenges inherent in patient care
  • Learn strategies to maintain mental well-being, such as establishing healthy work boundaries, seeking professional support, and cultivating a positive workplace culture.

Aim

To highlight the potential barriers faced by patients seeking bariatric dental care services, the  risk assessment criteria that need to be considered when delivering such a service and to address how current access issues within dental services may affect this group of patients.

Learning objectives

  • Understand the physical, logistical, medical and social barriers to accessing dental services for patients with a high BMI
  • Outline risk assessment criteria that should be considered when delivering a bariatric dental service
  • Discuss how current access issues within NHS dentistry may impact on bariatric referral criteria and availability of specialist services
  • Understand how dental treatment planning may be impacted for patients with a high BMI, taking into account the principles of realistic dentistry.

14:30 The patients who need us most - Ensuring equitable access for vulnerable patient groups in the CDS and PDS

Aim

The presentation will provide participants with a better understanding of how the BDA works to influence external stakeholders and lobby on behalf of the Community Dental Service (CDS) and Public Dental Service (PDS).

Learning objectives

  • Understand the political drivers underpinning the provision of dentistry for vulnerable patient
  • Explore how political decisions regarding dental service provision in the CDS and PDS are made
  • Discuss process of stakeholder engagement and how this is key to influencing political decision
  • Explain which stakeholders the BDA engages with, to further patient causes
  • Summarise elements required to develop a successful campaign.

15:30 Oral Health Improvement in Scotland’s Prisons: Where have we been and where are we going?

Aim

To explore the history of NHS Scotland’s Oral Health Improvement Programme, the current focus, and vision for the future.

Learning objectives

  • Explore the journey to the current position of NHS Scotland’s Oral Health Improvement Programme in Scottish Prisons.
  • Understand the components of the programme and how it is currently led and delivered.
  • Explore current barriers and facilitators to oral health improvement in Prisons.
  • Explore possible options to develop oral health improvement interventions for people with experience of the justice system both within and outside of prisons.
