What to expect

This event will explain how to we can assess and diagnose TMJ related conditions. Valiki Sharma will show delegates how to understand the different components that could lead to TMJ related pain and discomfort such as tooth or musculoskeletal related issues, as well as management strategies and examination of the joint. To appreciate when a referral would be necessary.

  • To simplify diagnosing TMJ related pathology
  • Review the anatomy of the joint
  • Assess if the nature of the pain is muscular/dentoalveolar or a combination
  • Discuss the management strategies and pathway in helping TMJ patients and steps that can be taken in general practice.

Meet the speaker

Valiki Sharma 250 X250 Valiki Sharma Consultant in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

Val is a Consultant in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at The Luton & Dunstable Hospital Foundation Trust, London where he is the Lead clinician for Trauma as well as Education and is an Honorary Consultant Surgeon in several other hospitals, including East & North Hertfordshire and Bedford.

Internationally, he was Head of the Department for Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at San Fernando General Hospital, Trinidad and performed a series of successful free tissue transfer operations for oncology. He is an Honorary Lecturer at the University of the West Indies Dental School and an Honorary Consultant Maxillofacial Surgeon at Princess Marina Hospital, Botswana, where he mainly manages Cleft and paediatric OMFS.

Val is a clinical and academic tutor as well as a mentor for trainees at all levels, from medical and dental students to those coming to their consultant-level examinations. He has lectured extensively as well as organised and run meetings, conferences and courses both nationally & internationally. He is also heavily engaged in academia, having published several articles in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals.

He remains dedicated to the alleviation of Oral & Maxillofacial deformity and pathology, especially in the developing world.
