What to expect

This event will help delegates understand the historical practice of dentistry in the UK prior to regulation and to learn about the development of the profession in the Victorian era.

Learning objectives

  • Understand the evolution of dentistry as a profession in the UK
  • Have knowledge of the treatments historically available to patients
  • Understand the social and cultural factors that led people to consult unlicensed practitioners (some of which are useful in understanding people’s choices today)
  • Show awareness of the role of women in dentistry prior to and during professionalisation.

Meet the speaker

Caroline Rance 250X250 Caroline Rance Independent Researcher

Caroline Rance is an independent researcher writing about the history of medicine and associated topics at thequackdoctor.com and thequackdoctor.substack.com.

She particularly focuses on health fraud in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and is the author of The Quack Doctor and The History of Medicine in 100 Facts. She has appeared on the BBC’s Great British Railway Journeys and A House Through Time, and BBC Radio 4’s comedy panel show, Best Medicine.

Caroline has an MA in Medicine, Science and Society: Historical and Philosophical Perspectives from Birkbeck, University of London.

We are looking for enthusiastic members to join the High Wycombe and Aylesbury Section committee. A role on the committee is a great way to get involved in the BDA at a local level and to help provide and shape local educational and networking events. It’s also great to have on your CV!
