Membership definitions
Introduction
Membership of the British Dental Association conveys certain privileges and benefits as set out below. Such privileges and benefits may be changed from time to time in accordance with the Terms and Conditions of membership.
This document should be read in conjunction with the Articles of Association and the Terms and Conditions of membership (which prevail in the event of any conflict) (T&Cs).
Specific regulations and restrictions may apply to the use of certain services and, where applicable, these may be found on the BDA website.
Any references to ‘advice’, ‘support’, ‘information’, ‘guidance’ or ‘representation’, and similar terms in this document should be understood as applying only to UK jurisdictions.
We may record telephone conversations to offer you additional security, resolve complaints, for regulatory compliance and to improve our service standards. Conversations may also be monitored for staff training purposes. You will be alerted to this when you call.
Essential membership
Essential members are entitled to the following benefits and privileges:
Collective representation
Representation of the UK profession in its dealings with governments and employing authorities, including:

Membership of a Branch
The BDA has an active network of 21 branches, many divided into sections, ensuring local representation and the ability for members to network at a local level. Upon joining the BDA, you will be automatically become a member of your local branch if in the UK. Offerings vary, but can include:

The British Dental Journal (BDJ)
The BDJ is the official journal of the BDA and aims to inform readers of ideas, opinions, developments and key issues in dentistry - clinical, practical and scientific - stimulating interest, debate and discussion. All papers published in the BDJ are subject to rigorous peer review.

BDJ Open is our open-access, online-only journal, publishing dental and oral health research across all disciplines.

Evidence-Based Dentistry

Library
Access to the library
The BDA boasts Europe's most comprehensive dental library. Members can enjoy assistance from experienced library professionals.
Borrowing rights
- Up to eight items may be borrowed at any one time
- Items are loaned for one month
- Items can be renewed as long as another member has not reserved them.
Postal loan service
- Requested items posted free of charge within the UK
- Items may be returned in person to the Library or to the 'drop box' outside the building when closed
- Items may also be returned via post at the member's expense.
Specialist subject bundles service
- Topic collections comprising a Medline search, Cochrane reviews, guidelines, policy documents, recent BDJ articles, etc.
- Bundles can be posted or emailed on request and may take a week to prepare.
Literature search service
Library staff will search Medline, Cochrane and various other online sources for articles and/or details of guidelines/policy documents.
- Results emailed or posted back within two working days
- Each Medline search will contain:
- search strategy used (to demonstrate how the search was carried out)
- list of article references along with abstracts
- availability of each journal in the library
- Cochrane reviews plus electronic copies of guidelines/policy documents will be supplied where possible and references to them where not
- Access to Ovid Medline is also provided for members to carry out their own searches.
Ebooks
The Library offers a catalogue of over 400 ebooks, accessible via our website.

Members receive discounts on events run across the UK through headquarters. Price differentials are as generous as possible. Events run through Branches and Sections are not subject to the same policy, however preferential rates for members commonly apply at these locally organised events too
All BDA members automatically become members of the Benevolent Fund upon joining the BDA. Members oversee the charity and have the responsibility and authority to exercise voting rights at the Annual General Meeting or other Extraordinary General Meeting. Members elect the Board of Trustees who oversee the charity on their behalf.
The British Dental Conference and Dentistry Show is dentistry’s flagship conference and exhibition. Held in Birmingham each spring, members enjoy priority access to the BDA’s theatre.

Essential Affiliate
In this section, Overseas Dentists refers to people who qualified as a dentist outside of the UK and who are working towards registration as a dentist with the UK regulator (the GDC).
Overseas Dentists can apply for Essential Affiliate membership. The BDA may give notice to end an Essential Affiliate’s membership at any time two months after they have successfully registered as a dentist with the GDC. Overseas Dentists may then apply for Essential, Extra or Expert BDA membership
The online resources have been written to support Essential Affiliate members through the registration process and help navigate the landscape of UK dentistry.
Essential Affiliate members are entitled to the benefits and privileges of ‘Essential’ membership, with the following exclusions:
- Voting rights in elections.

We reserve the right to request documentary evidence in order to make an assessment about suitability for the package. Where the evidence is deemed inappropriate, or not made available when requested, a refund will be issued and the membership cancelled.
International membership

Extra Affiliate
In this section, Overseas Dentists refers to people who qualified as a dentist outside of the UK and who are working towards registration as a dentist with the UK regulator (the GDC). Overseas Dentists can apply for Extra Affiliate membership., The BDA may give notice to end an Extra Affiliate’s membership at any time two months after they have successfully registered as a dentist with the GDC. Overseas Dentists may then apply for Essential, Extra or Expert BDA membership.

The range of advice services ('Advice Services') available to members in this tier includes the following, subject to the Association's Policy on the provision of advice to non-salaried members.
Employment, self-employment and staffing matters
Access to representation and advocacy for employment tribunals, in relation to a claim against a member of practice staff, or following the issuing of an employment tribunal claim by a member of staff. Provision of representation is subject to the Association’s Policy on the provision of representation services and to compliance with the Association’s ‘terms of representation’, which will be provided to members at the time that the provision of representation services is agreed, and is otherwise available on request from the Advisory Services team.
