Led by Branch President Claire Field, the Northern Counties Branch enjoyed another successful year of events during 2017, keeping members topped up with CPD, and ensuring that it's not all work and no play, up North!
We kicked off the year in style with a traditional Highland piper welcoming us into the spectacular Sage Gateshead for our annual black tie "Burns Night" dinner.
In celebration of the infamous bard, we enjoyed a delicious five course meal, accompanied by amusing recitals from the poetry of Robbie Burns.
After a wee toast…or two, our ever-generous members broke Northern Counties' records and raised £1,257 for the BDA Benevolent Fund in our Charity Raffle.
The evening's frivolities were rounded off with a lively ceilidh dance accompanied by a traditional Scottish folk band, where the BDA's very own Chair, Mick Armstrong, was spotted enjoying a turn in his tartan suit!
Northern Counties Branch: offers lots of opporutnities for CPD and learning, as well as socialising and networking
Without working up such a sweat, the branch arranged "a night at the movies" where members had a chance to catch up with colleagues and savour some fantastic Indian street food in a more relaxed atmosphere at the historic Tyneside Cinema.
A private screening of the classic "The Whole Nine Yards", reminded us that our own little dentistry stresses really aren't so bad!
Young Dentists Group is thriving
This year, our Young Dentists Group brought back the legendary BDA Golf Day where dentists of all abilities battled it out in the picturesque grounds of Northumberland's Matfen Hall.
The region's associates, principals, hospital consultants and foundation dentists fought it out for bragging rights, and it was Danny Ball who took home the winner's trophy.
Our Young Dentists Group also took a swing at arranging some educational events. They got Tif Qureshi to present a lecture on "Ultimate Conservative Dentistry", and Professor Ross Hobson discuss "Short Term Orthodontics & Beyond".
We also welcomed Musaab Siddiqui who hosted the first Young Dentist Study Club in our region. "Rationalism vs Herodontics - the Sticky, the Firm and the Separable… this interesting (and sold out!) event was open to dentists of all ages, and was held in The Quillium Brother's Cafe in Newcastle.
To round off the year off, we returned to the Tyneside Cinema for our AGM, which had a good turnout. The event ushered in our new President, Onkar Dhanoya, taking over from Claire Field, after her two years in office. The event also included an update on GDC's news CPD requirements, by the knowlegable Past President and BDA Principal Executive Committee member, Paul Blaylock.
