Dental practices in England invited to join NHSmail

8 August 2018

The BDA has been advised by NHS England that all dental practices in England, both NHS and private, should sign up for NHSmail, a secure system for sharing patient data, and enabling dental practices to be compliant with data processing regulations.

NHSmail is a secure email service, freely available to all dental practices in England and aims to give you a secure platform for sharing patient identifiable and sensitive information, as well as providing a more joined-up service between health and care organisations.

The NHSmail service supports the paperless agenda by enabling electronic transmission of secure communications and reducing the dependence on paper and fax processes.

NHSmail is approved for clinical use and will improve data security across the profession. After 1 October 2018 all communications from NHS England to dental practices will only be sent to NHSmail accounts, so it they advise that you sign-up as soon as possible.

Each dental practice can register for one shared practice mailbox, and up to a maximum of 10 individual user mailboxes per practice.

How do I register?

To start the registration for your dental practice, you will need to have completed the Information Governance Toolkit v14.1 (valid until 31 March 2019) or, its successor, the Data Security and Protection Toolkit.

You will also need to have your Care Quality Commission (CQC) Location ID to hand.

Registration should be completed before 14 September 2018 you can sign-up online

Need help?

A new national portal and dedicated support team is available to help dental professionals join and use the NHSmail service – if you require assistance you can contact the team via email or visit the NHSmail portal help pages.

Training resources and a user-guide for NHSmail are also available on the portal's website.
