BDA Northern Ireland welcomes opportunity to sit on obesity prevention body
14 August 2018
BDA Northern Ireland has welcomed the opportunity to nominate a dental representative to sit on the Obesity Prevention Steering Group for the first time.
BDA NI will join with representatives from Government departments, as well as leading organisations from the world of public health, including British Heart Foundation, Diabetes UK and Institute of Public Health.
The high-level Steering Group has an important role in policy development in relation to obesity prevention in Northern Ireland. Its current focus is the Framework for Preventing and Addressing Overweight and Obesity in Northern Ireland– A Fitter Future for All.
Roz McMullan, Chair of the BDA's Northern Ireland Council, said:
"We welcome this opportunity to input the dental and oral health perspective to inform government policy around obesity prevention. For too long, the connections and relevance between oral health and wider public health have been overlooked.
"Giving dentists a place on the Steering Group plugs a gap that has existed to this point. Importantly, it acknowledges that oral health is integral to public health. While belated, it has come on the back of intensive lobbying efforts by BDA NI to have the dental perspective heard. We understand the CDO has made the case that the group would benefit from input from a dental and oral health perspective, and this has been accepted.
"We very much hope that this development signals a new departure whereby key oral health messages articulated by the dental profession become embedded within the policymaking process."
