BDA support: Dental public health and academia
With the abolition of NHS England and concerns about university finances, here’s more about the support available to you
The detail so far
Dental public health
We have warned officials that the announcement to reduce the size of Department of Health and NHS England central workforce by 50% could critically undermine an already fragile dental public health function.
We’ve been clear that a thriving dental public health consultant workforce is essential for the delivery of the Government’s agenda for oral health, and that the capacity of the workforce is at breaking point following relentless successions of organisational change processes.
We will continue to seek guarantees that our workforce will be protected from headcount reductions throughout this process.

Dental academics
We are aware of concerns about university finances at some institutions and the impact this might have on jobs. Members are understandably worried but we have no confirmation that dental teaching roles are affected at this stage. We are knocking on the doors of HR teams at schools to represent your interests.
There is uncertainty about how job losses in universities will go on to affect the provision of BDS teaching; job losses elsewhere in tertiary education are likely to result in rationalisation of support for academics on the front line with students.
